Day 42, the heat returns!

Day 42, August 17th, 76.1km and 663m climb, Fernie to Edward's Lake Recreation Site

A big day today and hot! We started early from Fernie with the intention of grabbing some cereal from the supermarket and hitting the road but A&W was on the way so we had bacon and egg sandwiches,  coffee and hot chocolate - a yummy start to the day! By the time we stocked up at the supermarket it was 0830 and perfect riding conditions.

We chose to skip the single track this morning as there was a bridge washed out apparently requiring a significant hike-a-bike. I was secretly quite pleased as my knees needed a break from the pinch climbs! It was a beautiful ride today, forest typical of the last few days for the first 20km until a sealed road took us through Elko and onto Baynes Lake. We had planned to stop and camp at Baynes Lake but it was only just after lunch and we both felt good so we kept going.

The afternoon was hot, hot, hot with not much shade and a significant change in scenery. Dry, sparse tree cover and fortunately mostly downhill.  We are about 15km from the US border so will cross into Montana tomorrow.  The Rec site we are at is stunning. A spring fed lake with turtles, a few quiet sites and just us, our French Canadian friends and a lovely Spanish couple about our age who arrived just after we did. They plan to be in Antelope Wells at the end of the Divide by October 1st so are aiming for 100km per day. We think it will be mid to late October for us. It'll be interesting to see what part the weather plays in our travels. USA, here we come!
