Day 22 new roads

Day 22, July 28th, Castlegar to Nelson, 55km, 869m climb.

This morning we were up at 0430 and on the road by 0545. Slow to get going so early! Today we took back roads to Nelson. The BC Trail which we have been following actually goes on a southerly route to Nelson but the Trans Canada Trail heads north. In the end we did a back road for the first part of the day that was recommended to us by our Warmshowers host and was neither the BC Trail or the TCT. It was a lovely sealed back road that conveniently ended with a cafe just in time for 2nd breakfast. No wonder we are spending so much!

Today we found several of those pesky little vertical climbs that aren't particularly long but are seriously testing on a loaded bike! Still, the scenery continues to be impressive and it was a nice change to be on sealed rural roads for most of the day. The hydropower network is extensive and very interesting to look at as we are riding past. We rode into town just before 12 and checked out a couple of bike shops. We then headed to the lakefront to find a shady spot for lunch and to spend the afternoon. It started to cool off around 6pm so we packed up and headed to the supermarket to grab some things for dinner with our Warmshowers hosts.

Tonight and tomorrow night we are staying with Jenny and Chase and their 2 dogs. Jenny and Chase live up some very steep roads so we got some good practice pushing our loaded bikes. Beautiful views down over the lake and a lovely evening chatting over the BBQ.
