Day 17, a long day!

Published on 25 July 2022 at 05:40

Day 17, Little Dipper Hideaway to Night Sky RV and tent site, 60km and 212m climb.

We started early this morning to again try and escape the heat. Just as well as much of the morning was in the open. In 2015 a massive wildfire swept through the area destroying just about everything in its path. We rode a good 15km through blackened stumps that are all that is left of the forest through this part.

As the day warmed up we took plenty of breaks and Gordon had a couple of swims along the river. As we reached Midway, the trail was in the open and we were fair cooking as we arrived at the museum. Midway is ground zero for the KVR rail trail and we now leave it to head onto the Western line. The museum showcases the history of the rail line but to be honest we were more interested in escaping the heat and using their wifi!

I have discovered that the e sim I am using is not working in this part of the state and neither is vodafone as it uses the same provider. So we are resorting to using wifi where we can find it. Not ideal and it means big gaps between posts.

We swung by the supermarket to stock up and recharge a bit (handy plugs and a table on the store porch). While waiting for a recharge a huge afternoon thunderstorm rolled in and we were treated to quite the display of lightening, thunder and a little bit of rain. This also cooled things down a little dropping the temperature 10 degrees to 23. We decided to ride a further 12km to stay at a wee RV park we had heard about from some other riders. It is a quiet wee spot on the river, completely off grid with a composting toilet and best of all a hot shower! I feel clean again! Not only that, it's free with Ginny using it as an opportunity to pass it forward to cyclists after she did a trip across the US with her sister and was treated to many trail angels along the way. We may even stay two nights if we can.

It sounds like you are still enjoying the ride Jill. Lucky to finally get some rain although I bet 23C seemed really cold. We have finally settled in to a warmer 25-30C few days in Vancouver now Has Gordon noticed how extra cold the Canadian lakes are? I, myself, never swim in them because they are cold enough to give me an ice cream headache. Enjoy your time off the bikes and remember that there is always a Tim Hortons nearby
