Day 6 Climbing!

Day 6 Hope to Sunshine Valley, 26km and 750m climb, 32 degrees

Today we thought might be more like a rest day given the short distance. Hahaha. It really wasn't! It took us 5 hours 35 minutes hours to ride comprising 2 hours 54 mins of moving and 2 hours 44 minutes of resting. Lol! So yep, she was a pretty steady climb in the heat along a 4 lane highway but with a lovely big shoulder. There were little pockets of shade that we stopped in to admire our surroundings. It's an interesting area. In WWII the road was built by Japanese people interred for the course of the war. The place where we are staying tonight was their internment camp, now called Sunshine Valley.

Another really interesting feature is the Hope Slip. In 1965 half the mountain came down over the road killing 4 people and burying the road under 60m of debris. The new road is built over the top of the slip. Possibly even more interesting was the fact that at the lookout for the slip, in the middle of nowhere, is an EV charging station. Just because I suppose! Oh, and it's free to charge too!

We are camped tonight on the porch of my cousin's wife's brother's bach. It is lovely and cool in the shade. The house is all closed up and hasn't been used since last summer hence sleeping on the porch. We've connected with the neighbours and they have offered us a shower and fresh water for our bottles. Trail angels 😇

More climbing tomorrow although we understand the weather will be a little cooler so that will be nice.
