Day 5 Chilliwack to Hope 57km and 300m climb. 32 degrees C.
Today was a lovely ride although getting up there in terms of temperatures at over 30 degrees all day. We had thought we'd leave early but we were so comfortable at our Warmshowers house that we didn't get away until 9. The ride started with a gentle meander through some back country roads before climbing onto another dyke beside the Fraser River. We then took our lives into our own hands by crossing the river on a bridge with 2 way traffic and no verge. That was pretty intense for about 10 minutes!!

We stopped in Agassiz for a coffee before heading along Highway 7 toward Hope. This route is known as the Lougheed highway and for a main highway is pretty quiet and has a huge verge. We had hoped to ride via Chilliwack Lake to get to Hope over a couple of days but unfortunately part of the route is closed due to the flooding last year so we took this alternate option via the highway. Despite the heat we are definitely now in the mountains and Hope is completely surrounded by high peaks. It is starting to look like the Canada we've seen in the pictures now! Apparently Hope is where they filmed Rambo so Gordon lined up for a photo with the man himself.

We booked into the Coquihalla Campground and are resting in the shade. The bugs are not too bad now that we have some decent bug spray and there is a slight breeze. Tomorrow we will head out along highway 3 toward Princeton. We expect it will take us at least 3 days to get there. Unfortunately this is another road diversion as the BC Trail is closed in places again. Once we get to Princeton we should be off the main roads for a while. So tomorrow we start our first real climbing of the trip. Wish us luck!
