Day 1 Vancouver to Walnut Grove

Day 1 on the bikes. 58km and 434m climb. What a great start to the trip. The forecast was for rain but we decided there was no point in faffing around so we headed off. So much for the forecast, hot and sunny was the order of the day.

We followed the Trans Canada Trail which conveniently passed within 50m of my cousins place where we have been staying since Sunday. Norma, Funky and Linden fed us, watered us and drove us all over Vancouver seeing the sights and picking up those last minute items for the ride. Rupert the dog rounded out the family experience! Thanks team!

The Trans Canada Trail does exactly as described and winds its way from one side of Canada to the other. Today's journey along it took us up through Port Moody and Port Coquitlam winding its way through some beautiful stands of trees with rivers and creeks. Today the bulk of the riding was on gravel paths with just a couple of short road sections. We crossed two massive bridges as well.

We have ended the day staying with Warm Showers hosts in Walnut Grove which we successfully navigated to despite various road closures that threatened to derail us.

Overall an awesome first day, a gentle start while we get used to the weight of the bikes and get some calluses back on our bums!
