Day 47, Pacific Sojourn, June 2, La Uaina to Manusina Beach Fales, 48km

Today we left the north coast of Samoa and traversed down to the South Coast via the east coast (or something like that!). Our ride started with a gentle climb before ramping up to over 500m of elevation over about 7km. We managed the climb in power level 1 and gear 1 on the ebikes so were able to keep battery use to a minimum. The hill country was beautiful and the temperature change from bottom to top quite noticeable. The main water Reservoir for Apia is up here but very little else. Very few fales and no villages until descending on the other side.

Back down to the coast, we stopped near the bottom to watch a game of cricket underway at the local school. Very competitive! Once we hit the coast we stopped at the beach for lunch and were brought two niu (coconuts) to drink from the people living in the house next to where we stopped. Very refreshing!

The final 10km round the coast was the most beautiful coastline we have seen yet. This section of coast was completely destroyed by the 2009 tsunami which killed over 100 people. It has been rebuilt since but evidence of the tsunami is still present with scoured cliffs and coral only just returning to the lagoon. The Manusina Beach fales where we are staying tonight were completely destroyed and were rebuilt in the years following. This is by far the nicest beach fales we have stayed in to date. Great hosts, excellent food, roomy falesbwith a deck area with table and chairs, and a rubbish bin! Bathrooms are clean with liquid soap and paper towels! We definitely prefer the beach fales to the hotels, hands down.
