Day 18, Pacific Sojourn,  May 4th, Turtle Kayak

Today we had a small group heading out on the Turtle Kayak trip so Lulu and I closed up shop and headed out to join them. Lulu doesn't swim and this was her first time kayaking so it was definitely going to be an adventure! We had no groups heading out on bikes, so it was an ideal opportunity to join the tour.

Lulu and I shared a double Kayak, while Jessie (guide) and our client Adi took singles. Lulu did great. It took a few strokes for her to figure out how the paddle worked but once she had that we were off down the mangrove river out to the lagoon. Our first stop at the beach for a swim saw me take Lulu for a swim with her life jacket on so she could see how it would keep her afloat if we tipped out. From there it was off to try and find some turtles. Unfortunately it was bucketing with rain so we didn't see a huge number but what we did see was pretty spectacular. One big fella in particular was going so fast he was leaving a massive wake behind him. Very cool.

The rain was super heavy and we couldn't see much so we headed back toward the mangrove river and up toward Vai Villa for lunch. Jessie wanted to paddle with Lulu (who also happen to be his mum) so I jumped in the single. In the photos you can see some crab traps and a large boat that was swept up the estuary in the 2018 tsunami. It's about 2km inland and has never been claimed.

We stopped just short of the end to do the run around the Kayak game which everyone managed without getting wet. Great fun and even Lulu did it. Lunch was as good as last time and I ate far too much. With all the rain it is much cooler too. Back at Outdoor Samoa which is on the opposite side of the island they also had big wind gusts with the rain which we fortunately didn't get. Apparently it was so strong they thought a cyclone was coming through!
