Day 17, Pacific Sojourn, May 3rd, a wee mountain bike

After we saw two groups off to the ferry heading toward Savaii, Lulu and I headed into the hinterland behind Outdoor Samoa for a mountainbike ride. The purpose today's ride was to check out the trails that were used before covid but have not been revisited since. Most is a mix of 4x4 and gravel tracks and this was all passable. The section up onto fish mountain was too overgrown to access so we headed back to base. On our return we wandered down through Lulu's village of Mulifanua, past where her kids went to school and numerous houses and farmlets.

Many people here have a range of income sources including subsistence farming, wages or salaries from work and remittances from overseas. You can buy fruit and vegetables from roadside stalls and most villages have a local shop selling some basic goods. Sometimes there are two shops! The great thing about what we are doing is the opportunity to really see the Samoan way of life much more closely than if we were just here for a short holiday. We are very lucky.
