Day 8 Pacific Sojourn, April 24, 30km bike ride, 50km vehicle transfer, Lauiula to Falelalepo.
An earliesh start this morning with breakfast at 7.30 and on the road by 8am. I'm not sure an early start makes a huge amount of difference to the temperature but we can at least hope! The first 22km took us to a beautiful village built around a volcanic crater. The bottom of the crater had a well in it that apparently, if it runs dry, it means the chief's wife has been up to know good. Interestingly, they built a new well just a few years ago to ensure a consistent water source!

From here it was only a few more kilometers to the Lava church and virgins grave. From 1904 to 1911 give or take. The local volcano blew its stack and spewed Lava down its flanks. The Lava flowed through a church and the nearby graveyard. The church was destroyed and only a Lava filled shell remains. Fascinating patterns in the rock show how the Lava swirled around the church and entered through the rear. Not far away, the entire cemetery was destroyed, all except the virgins grave. This is where the chiefs 30 year old virgin daughter was buried and the Lava just flowed right around the grave.

After lunch it was into the vehicles for a transfer over the hill and through to our accommodation site at Falealupo Beach fales. This is another beautiful spot with the most stunning snorkeling out in the lagoon. Luminescent coral and tropical fish abound. Just beautiful. Dinner, chatting with new found friends and off to bed in our fale for the night.
