Day 27, vanlife, February 15, Clutha Gold Trail
I finished off the Clutha Gold Trail today. We had a lovely quiet night at the campground before hitting the trail around 9am. (We highly recommend the Miller's Flat Campground, right on the river with great facilities). I rode, and Gordon headed south in the van. The first 30km to Beaumont were lovely. The trail meandered along the river with plenty to keep things interesting including the Lonely Graves. Apparently a chap discovered an unidentified body in 1865 and had him buried with a wooden plaque that said 'here lies someone's darling'. Turns out the guy who made the plaque wasn't the guy who found the body but they buried him next to the original grave anyway a few years later!

Loads of interesting information boards all the way down the trail about the history of the area including gold mining, Chinese settlement and farming. I even went for a wee walk down to onenof the original swing bridges across the river that has been restored.
The last 20km to Lawrence were not so exciting as the trail largely followed the road. We did pass through a long disused train tunnel though so that was fun. It was a southerly head wind so there was some judicious use of trail mode on the final section. I should feel guilty about using g an e bike but I don't!
Gordon met me for lunch and we wandered into Lawrence for a look around before heading back to base camp in Alexandra.
