Day 18, vanlife, waterblasted on the Routeburn

Day 18, Vanlife,  February 6th, Lake McKenzie Hut to the Divide and on to Ardlussa Farm.

We had a bit of a sleep in this morning as the forecast was for the rain to stop around 9am. Sure enough, by the time we'd breakfasted and packed, it was only lightly drizzling.

Today we had a 12km, predominantly downhill walk (although there was a lot of uphill even for predominantly downhill!), through native bush. The highlight was definitely the Earland Falls. A 172m drop that we walked almost directly under. It was like being waterblasted! The power of the spray and the wind generated by the fall of water was very intense and we all got completely soaked. There is a detour through this section if it is flooded and many people did take it but we'd heard it was all good tonpass through so we did. A real natural adrenaline buzz!

It was definitely easier walking today for which Gordon was eternally grateful.  His hip has been bothering him a lot over the past two days and he was dreading the third day. He has done incredibly well again although I suspect there was a lot of type two fun happening! Sally and I are relatively unscathed although both of us have sore feet!

We were all happy to get to the van and have cold drinks. Sally had never been to Milford Sound before so we turned right out of the carpark instead of left and took in the spectacular drive to the Homer Tunnel and Milford. Highly recommend a drive up here if you haven't done it before. Truly spectacular.

We are at Sally's farm for the night tonight having showered and cleaned up a bit. We'll head to Queenstown tomorrow before ending up back in Alexandra late tomorrow night.
