Day 17, vanlife, torrential rain on the Routeburn

Day 17, Vanlife,  February 5th, Routeburn Falls Hut to Lake McKenzie Hut

Today was very wet. A front came through and dropped 35mm of rain on us. It was also a bit breezy in places but we managed to stay upright. The incredible thing about rain in Fiordland is that it makes already spectacular scenery even more spectacular.  When it rains here, every single place where water can run free turns into a waterfall. From tiny rivulets to thundering waterfalls, everything is flowing and it is most spectacular.

Our walk today took us up and over the Harris Saddle before traversing along the edge of the hills and dropping us sharply down to Lake McKenzie and the Hut. Aside from the last 30 minutes or so dropping down to the Hut, it was a great day despite the wet. The last part was quite technical and both Gordon and I found it tough going. Eventually the Hut loomed up out of the bushes and we were relieved to arrive.

We won't get our boots dry, but hopefully the rest of our gear will be largely dry by morning in time for us to go out and get it all wet again! The forecast is for more rain!
