Day 181, January 2nd, San Diego

Another day using the Hop On Hop Off trolley bus, but today it was super crowded, so we adjusted our plans a little. Our first stop was to book a Harbour cruise. This left at 11 so we had an hour to kill. I managed to convince the ticket office at the Midway museum to let me back on board to visit the one section we missed when we were there two days ago. This included the galley, laundry and sick bay. The sick bay is actually a 20 bed hospital with two operating theaters, and an ICU bed! The great thing was I got to talk with the volunteer there who was a surgeon at a MASH unit during the Vietnam War. I would love to have spent more time with him but had to rush to catch our boat unfortunately.

The boat cruise took us both north and south in the San Diego Harbour.  If you were a Russian spy it would be very easy to take photos of all the Navy battle ships, aircraft carriers, submarines and support ships. The battle ships are really interesting. I've never seen anything like them, even in the movies!

After the cruise we had planned to Hop off in Coronado and have a walk around but the trolley bus was super over crowded with people waiting up to an hour for a seat. We decided not to risk it but enjoyed the trip over the bridge to Coronado Island and the drive around that we missed yesterday due to the weather.

Back at Old Town we stopped in at the Mormon Battalion Historic site commemorating a 2000 mile march from Iowa to San Diego by the Mormon battalion in the 1800s. It was very well done with live narration and virtual narration that worked really well together.  Definitely worth a visit.

It was dark by the time we got back to the motel so another long day. We have really enjoyed exploring San Diego, particularly its history. Dodgy forecast again tomorrow so it may be a quiet day.
