Day 180, January 1st, 2023, San Diego
The weather was a bit ordinary today but we headed out to brave the elements anyway. Today we jumped on the hop on hop off trolley bus for a tour of the city. This is one of the activities included in our pass and it took us straight from Old Town San Diego State Park, near where we are staying, to the Maritime Museum.
We actually started by wandering around half of the state park (we did the other half on our way back) which is an interesting look at some of the original adobe houses built by early settlers in the area. Some have been maintained as museums and others have modern day shops and restaurants in them.

The Maritime Museum was really interesting too although we were disappointed that we couldn't go on the submarine which was closed due to the weather. The highlight was having a good look around the Star of India ship which is the world's oldest active sailing ship (not sure on the definition of 'world' in these parts but let's run with it). Interestingly, the ship did the immigrant run from the UK to NZ back in the 1870s and there was a whole section in the display dedicated to a chap and his family who kept a diary on one particular voyage in 1879. He settled in Nelson! I think the picture above might show Melrose House.
After the Maritime Museum we hopped back on the trolley bus planning to get off in Coronado. Unfortunately the bus couldn't go over the Coronado Bridge due to the high winds so we drove all the way round and up a causeway to get there. This added a good 30 minutes to the trip but we did get some good views of the beach. The weather was not very nice though so we stayed on board and hopped off in Balboa Park instead. There are what seems like 100 museums in Balboa Park and despite the fact we have been to two museums in two days we are not really museum people so were not that excited to go visit them. However, the weather stopped us eating our lunch outside when we arrived so we dived into the Automobile Museum which was actually very interesting for semi-petrolheads like ourselves.
When we came back out, there was a short break in the weather which gave us enough time to spread our avocado on our bagels before it closed in again. Back on the trolley bus and back to Old Town and a short walk back to the motel.
The weather forecast is slightly better for tomorrow so hopefully we might get out on the water.
