Day 178, December 30th, San Diego Zoo
Today we went to the zoo. The fun part of traveling on a budget is figuring out the most cost effective way of getting from A to B. It is also most often the most adventurous! So today we walked 1.5km to the Old Town Transit Station, jumped on the Blue Line Tram to City College and then transferred to the number 7 bus to get up to the zoo! All for $2.50 each the San Diego transit system allows you to pay $2.50 the first time you get on a bus or tram and then transfer for free any time over the next 2 hours as many times as you like. Public transport is always a bit of fun and usually well worth the effort if only for a bit of people watching!

Once at the zoo, we activated the activities passes we've purchased to see us through the next few days. 7 activities out of about 50 to choose from for $132. The zoo alone would have been $65 each! Anyways, onto the zoo experience. It was crowded! I mean, wear your face mask at all times crowded! So a little overwhelming for us but we still got to see some cool things including gorillas, reindeer, a grizzly bear (semi hibernating so not as close up as I would have liked. I really wanted to have a good look from a safe distance!), elephants, vultures, lions, tigers, cougars (the type that were probably following us through the desert recently), a leopard and a fish-eating cat. We liked the big cats, the elephants and the gorillas best.
By mid afternoon we were ready to start heading home. It was also starting to rain so that was a good sign to head off. We reversed our journey and made it safely back to the Travelodge. Tomorrow we plan to head back into town to visit the Midway museum ship and the Maritime Museum. More rain forecast so glad we brought our rain coats.
