Day 128, changing routes!

Day 128, November 11th, 58.3km and 481m climb, del Mar warmshowers to Chula Vista KOA

Today we traversed through San Diego and also left the Pacific Coastal route and started the So Cal Desert Ramble (check out bikepacking.com if you want to know more about this route). It was a lovely warm day and the route again hugged the coastline for most of the day.

I should mention that our day kicked off with rancho heuveros (Mexican eggs, beans, avocado, hot sauce and cheese) made by Kevin. It was hard to leave! Breakfast got us all the way through to 1230 with no snacking required! Perfect!

We saw seals and pelicans at La Jolla (pronounced La Hoya), and rode through Mission Beach which was super crowded as it was Memorial Day and many people had the day off. We played dodgems both there and on the San Diego waterfront where we watched a spitfire display high above us as well as a blimp! There were two cruise ships in Port and 100s of people lining up to board. We also experienced our first ever bicycle passing lane! Very cool!

We had intended to ride through to Sweetwater Park tonight, a further 10km, but the campground was fully booked so we grabbed a site at the KOA instead. A bit expensive but stress free as the bikes have been securely locked away so we can sleep well.

We start climbing tomorrow so it will be interesting to see how far we get. Looking forward to being back on gravel and single track and away from civilization again! Our plan is to restart our early mornings again tomorrow as it is light by 6am but dark by just after 5pm so we need to make the most of the daylight hours.
