Day 129, November 12th, 50.1km and 885m climb, San Diego KOA to stealth camp 10km before Alpine
What an excellent day! Straight into the single track and up into the Sweetwater Mountain Bike Park. The first 10km was relatively smooth and flat and then we got into the technical undulating single track. Rocky, pinch climbs, drops and lots of other Mountain bikers admiring our skills on fully loaded touring bikes. What a hoot! Hard at times though with more than a few pushes.

Once we exited the park we had a few miles on a sealed highway with a bike lane (the San Diego cycling infrastructure is incredible) before turning off into a canyon climb. This was a lovely gradual ascent for 10 or so kilometers until for some reason they turned the bike/hike trail off the gravel road and pretty much pointed it straight up! Parts of it were a two person push so real hike a bike today!

Our plan was to find a stealth camp somewhere along this climb which we have kind of done. Unfortunately there was nowhere suitable along the single track so we have found a flattened area off the gravel road out of the single track. We left it until right on dark to put the tent up and are now ensconced in the tent listening to a wedding party about a kilometer away. Hopefully that will keep the neighbours occupied so we remain undisturbed.
Wonderful to be out of the city and back in the wilderness again. Real bikepacking today so if the rest of the route is anything like today we will be tested daily - we can't wait!
