Day 108, 22nd October, Wolcott campsite to Glenwood Springs
We woke to a cold morning, toasty warm in the wee van. It was such a luxury! Overnight a ute had pulled into our camping spot and a tent had gone up next to our bikes. We were watching carefully out the window at midnight as we didn't really know what they were planning in the middle of the night! All was good though.
The sun soon came up and we broke out the kitchenette at the back of the van for breakfast. At the back, the van has a fridge drawer, a 2 burner propane stove and a sink with 5 gallons of water storage. Inside is a table and sofa that turns into a large comfy bed, and plenty of storage. It is well equipped and comfortable but I drive it like a slug to conserve fuel! It has a V8 petrol engine so you can just about watch the fuel gauge drop! Even the slowest trucks go past us on the freeway!
We have prepaid for 100 miles per day to get to LA which will possibly be not quite enough but it's not hugely expensive if we go over so we are not too worried. Still, our sedate pace matches our pace on the bike (relatively speaking) so we are happy trundling along letting the world go by.
After yesterday's overkill on the mileage in both the UHaul in the morning and the van into the night, we decided to regroup a little today and just drove 40 odd miles to a KoA campground to do laundry and shower. We have also planned a bit more of an itinerary for the next few days starting with Moab, Arches National Park and Canyonlands. Exciting!
Although we didn't go far, the scenery was certainly spectacular, particularly down through Glenwood Canyon - 14 miles through a stunning gorge with some pretty impressive engineering on the road. Gordon took some photos so I'll try and post them tomorrow. It feels weird not being able to stop just anywhere to take shots!
The forecast snow in the mountains is, of course, rain and sleet at the lower elevation we are now at but should pass by Monday. It will be interesting to see how we manage the outside kitchenette in the rain tomorrow! We will head toward Moab tomorrow regardless of the weather.
