Day 83, heading into the dry zone

Day 83, September 27th, 74.54km and 555m climb, Pinedale to informal campsite Lander Cutoff Road

We were up and away by 0830 before anyone else was around. Hopefully the dogs guarded the garage that we left open!  The first part of the day was 50km of predominantly downhill sealed road. We had planned to camp at a cyclist only primitive campsite at this point. After mucking around trying to find the spot, we had lunch and decided to push on. There was no shade and the site was relatively average in terms of location and environment. We knew the next informal campsite was a further 25km. The sealed road turned immediately to gravel and started heading uphill. Fortunately the gravel was beautifully smooth. We climbed close to 500m over the final 25km and it was pretty warm out so we were both hugely relieved to find the campsite was unoccupied, relatively flat and has a stunning outlook across the valley.

Gordon did not have a good day today and did really well to push on. He has been fighting a cold and the flatter riding plays havoc with his bum. Since his hip replacement, his sit bones do not sit evenly so there is a constant pressure point that we have to manage carefully. His Parkinsons symptoms were also playing up today so put all that together and it was a big day out for him.

We are both really pleased we did push on though as this is a stunning spot. After riding through flattish, desolate sagebrush plains for most of the day, this site is back in some trees with a view across to the Wind River Range. With a bit of luck we will also be in the sun in the morning.

Tomorrow we will aim for another informal campsite (these are marked on our app/maps and have no facilities so are just places we can safely camp. Some have water, some don't. This one is about a kilometer from the river). If we have a good day, we might push on to Atlantic City but there is no rush to do that.
