Day 76, into the Tetons

Day 76, September 20th, 63.73km and 802m climb, informal campsite to Colter Bay

Today was almost like a day of three halves! We woke to the sound of thundering hooves of some sort galloping past our tent at 0630. We were too scared to look out but once we were up, our suspicions were confirmed, moose! Big footprints about 3 metres from the tent. Very cool but a bit unnerving! We also woke to ice on the tent which surprised us as the forecast was for a relatively warm night. It didn't really feel that cold either.

We were on the road pretty promptly anticipating quite a big day. It started out with a 7km climb out of the grassy lake meadows that seemed to take ages, eventually we dropped to the grassy lake reservoir which wasn't grassy at all and a final pinch climb out. At last we reached the John D Rockefeller Memorial Byway which was a stunning gravel road winding down a beautiful valley. We stopped for lunch and to dry out the tent just short of Flagg Ranch. After coffee and coke at Flagg Ranch, it was 25km of sealed road (including a 300m climb over a pass) to Colter Bay.

Once over the pass we entered the Grand Teton National Park and are now on the other side of the mountains we saw two days ago. Pretty impressive peaks, some still have snow on them too.

So today was part grovelly uphill, part beautiful valley riding and part fastish sealed road. We have now finished section 2 of the Divide and will start section 3 tomorrow.
