Day 58, an odd day

Day 58, September 2nd, 61.17km and 967m climb, Helena to Boulder

Today was an odd day. We decided to take an alternate route which while officially a formal alternate to the Divide route was kind of weird and had a long section on the Interstate up and over a saddle that climbed 8km and rose 500m. In fact we did two of these today and it was hot although the first was off road. So a bit of type 2 fun today. We probably should have stuck to the main trail but never mind. Regardless of which way we go, we are still meeting interesting people, seeing amazing sights and staying in quirky places. Tonight we are staying at 'the Bike Barn'. This has been set up by the locals in Boulder in memory of a local woman who was an avid cyclist who was killed some years ago by being rear ended. It's well set up with everything a cyclist needs and a really nice way to remember someone.

Earlier in the day we stopped in a tiny place called Clancy which had a wee cafe. The chap running it was an avid Trump supporter in his 60s but a really nice guy (clearly one can be both). He and his wife were both body builders and while he looked good, she looked like she was taking stuff she shouldn't! No assumptions though! Needless to say, it was an interesting interaction in small town America and one we would not have had if we'd followed the main route. So there are always pros and cons to every decision!

Tomorrow we will rejoin the main route as we make our way toward Butte. The forecast is for another very hot day.
