Day 56, the Llama Ranch

Day 56, August 31st, 38.4km and 713m climb, Lincoln to the Llama Ranch.

An early start this morning to avoid the heat of the day again, but it was COLD at 6am! 1 degree on my Garmin! We stopped by the supermarket to grab some cereal which I forgot yesterday then headed out of town. Today we climbed up over the Continental Divide for the fourth time topping out at just over 2000m. There wasn't too much to see at the top but we were a bit perturbed to see a huge tanker plane drop fire retardant in the next valley several times as we climbed! There was a wee spotter plane that marks the spot for the drop then the tanker flies over and releases its load. We only saw a small amount of smoke and after 3 drops the tanker departed so hopefully it got it sorted.

From the top it was a quick descent down a gorgeous tight valley with a wee stream running through it. It does seem weird that this water will exit into the Atlantic Ocean.

We pulled into the Llama Ranch just after lunch. This is another Divide institution. Barbara and her partner John (who arrived 6 years ago and never left) have a lovely wee farmlet with a selection of cabins for cyclists to stay in, each equipped with beds, food, water and power of various kinds. We were greeted with cold soda, beer and sandwiches with the only stipulation for our stay is that we pass it forward. What a great philosophy.

We are ensconced in a wee cabin down the end of the alpaca yard with everything we could want including a solar shower. It is super hot again so we were glad to be out of the sun for the afternoon.

Tomorrow we head to Helena. There are two crossings of the Divide tomorrow so that will be interesting!
