Day 55, the heat returns

Day 55, August 30th, 56.48km and 753m climb, Ovando to Lincoln.

Let's start with the rest day. We stayed in wee Ovando for the day, chatting with the locals, tourists and riders coming through. We ate ice cream and rested our Weary legs. After spending the previous night in the jail, we sought redemption by staying last night in the church. This was a lovely, cool hideaway from the heat of the afternoon and we shared it with our new Belgian friends who had also decided to have a rest day in Ovando.

After a restful sleep, we were up early to avoid the heat later in the day. Yep, the temperatures are back into the mid 30s and sunny. Today we climbed up over Huckleberry Pass. It was a lovely, relatively gentle climb of around 600m taking us up to around 1800m ASL give or take. Before we reached the climb though, there was a very long, straight, corrugated gravel road to ride. Sometimes one's thoughts wander when riding these types of roads like 'why am I here' and 'when will this end'. Of course it always does end and a wee reflection on the alternate (eg sitting in an office) always puts things in perspective.

After the climb there was a wee downhill, another wee climb, a beautiful, cool stream, some lunch and a cruise out to Lincoln.

Lincoln is a classic American strip town with 4 casinos, a market and a gas station. It has redeemed itself though as the RV park is a wee gem with a beautiful wee creek, showers and plenty of shade to while away the afternoon reading books.
