Day 55, finally back in the wilderness!

Day 55, March 13, Mavora Lakes.

Today we got back on the road again. After leaving the farm we headed toward Mavora Lakes, two stunning lakes nestled in Department of Conservation land deep in Southland. The road out traverses farmland before a sudden left turn takes you into original native beech forest tucked in a valley of towering peaks and lakes.

From the carpark at the southern end of the northern lake, there is a 4wd track that continues around the lake for a further 10km. This track is also part of the Te Araroa walkway from Cape Reinga to Bluff and had our names written all over it for a bit of mountainbiking.  After a bite of lunch, we unloaded the bikes and headed off round the lake. On the way up, we hugged the lakefront for around 8km which made for challenging yet rewarding riding with everything from fine pea gravel to chunky rocks and stream crossings. On the way back we followed the 4wd farm track which had a new set of fun-inducing technical sections with big waterhole and steep climbs out of stream crossings. All in all a fun couple of hours out and about.

Tonight we are camped up right on the lake front with stunning views right up the lake toward where we rode. Its a cool evening though and we are expecting temperatures to drop pretty low overnight. Tomorrow we will head out to catch up with some friends bikepacking nearby and we are giving a couple of Te Araroa walkers a ride out to the main road.
