Day 32, vanlife,  February 20, Otago Rail Trail

After a quiet night at the St Bathans Domain,  I got Gordon to drop me off on the Sounds 2 Sounds route so I could ride the 75kms back to Alexandra.  I picked up the route where it exits the Omarama Saddle and headed I to Oturehura where I joined the Otago Rail Trail. Having ridden this section of Trail several times previously,  I kept up a steady pace through to Lauder. Once in Lauder, I detoured to the NIWA Atmospheric Research Centre where my sister Penny and her husband Dan work. There I was treated to a bit of a guided tour including watching Penny use an instrument called a Dobson Spectrophotometer that was built in the 1930s to measure total ozone in the atmosphere. I finally got to see what they keep in those domed buildings!

From here it was 40km back to Alexandra and predominantly downhill with a strong side wind. I felt very sorry for all the people heading up the trail on non e bikes. They looked positively miserable! I should have felt guilty for being on an e bike myself but just felt grateful!

Gordon had spent the time productively trying to sort out the van battery which is still not holding a charge properly. It should be under warranty but needs to be tested so fingers crossed we can get bit sorted properly this time.
