Days 185 - 188, January 8th to 11th, Vista to Los Angeles to Nelson

We are back in Nelson to regroup and prepare for the next part of our adventures. Peter and Sylvia kindly drove us to Los Angeles where we spent the night at Motel 6 near the airport. With a free shuttle to the terminal, we were able to squeeze our bike boxes in along with our gear boxes. It was raining in LA so all four boxes got wet which was not helpful!

We were at the airport by 12 but our check in counters did not open until 4pm so we had a few hours to kill people watching. We met a lovely police officer and saw lots of interesting looking people. Still, 4pm seemed to take a long time to roll around! We were finally able to check in and were on our way.

We landed safely in the rain in Auckland, but our flight to Nelson was diverted to Blenheim due to severe turbulence in Nelson so it was a two hour bus ride over the hill instead. We convinced the bus driver to drop us off at the end of our friends' road where we are staying although I don't think the rest of the passengers were entirely thrilled!

It's humid here, humid and warm. Hopefully that's just the remnants of the cyclone that has been battering the country. Our plan for the next week is to sort out our van and gear, visit with mum and plan where to go first. We are staying with our friends Bernard and Fenella for a few days while we do all this. They have been kindly minding our van for the 6 months we have been away.

See you on the road soon!
