Day 138 and 139, rest and then back into the desert

Day 138, November 21 rest day Borrego Springs

Not much to report on our day off really. I went into town to do a resupply while Gordon sat by the pool. Then I went up to the Anzo-Borrego Visitors Center to have a look around. It's built underground to keep it cool during the summer so is very well designed.  I did a short nature walk while I was there and then went to join Gordon by the pool. The daytime temperatures are in the mid twenties so it is very pleasant!

Day 139, November 22nd, 49.2km and 240m climb, Borrego Springs to Freedom camp OHV park near Salton City.

Back into the desert today! After leaving camp, we wandered through yet more incredible metal sculptures on our way out of town. A huge serpent crossed under the road along with more dinosaurs and a scorpion. Just stunning. From here the route wound through a palm tree farm before kicking us straight back into sandy 4wd roads. The first ran for 5km adjacent to the road and climbed 175m. In hindsight the road would probably have been better!

The next off road section was delicious, dropping us into the Salada Arroyo, a gently winding downhill wash through the state park and out into the OHV park. You do see some weird things out there though! We had planned to camp in the desert but straight after lunch we were into OHV territory so felt it a little unsafe to camp. The OHV tracks run in all directions and although it is relatively quiet mid week, there is no point in taking risks that someone will run into us! No worries,  we pushed on and popped out at a covered picnic table with fire pit and adjacent toilet. After 50km, we decided that was sufficient for the day and parked up.

The sun is setting at about 4.30pm at present and it is dark by 5pm so finishing mid afternoon is almost a prerequisite for having sufficient time to set up camp and prepare food before it is dark. This means very early nights generally!

PS it was our 25th wedding anniversary today!
