Day 133, November 16th, 25km and 86m of climb, freedom camp Anzo-Borrego desert to Aqua Caliente Springs
Another short day today for reasons I will explain momentarily. We were up at 6am to a cold but still morning. No sign of the forecast high winds as yet. Still, it was 2 degrees and hard to drag ourselves from our warm sleeping bags!
We packed up and made our way back on track and down the canyon. We stopped briefly in the sun to warm up and have some breakfast but we were nearly out of food so it was not a big breakfast!

The tail end of the canyon was a continuation of yesterday's rocky trail for about 2 km before turning into a beautiful sandy 4x4 trail that flowed downhill and was a pleasure to ride. Before we knew it, we were out onto tar seal heading east predominantly downhill. Our goal was the Aqua Caliente general store where we planned to stock up on food and get some intel on our next section of riding which will be right into the desert. Unfortunately the shop was closed! However it is scheduled to be open tomorrow so we decided to stay a night at the campground 2 minutes up the road and hope it is open in the morning. We had just enough food to get through today thankfully!

Bad luck is often balanced by good and we have discovered this a stunning place in the heart of the desert with free access to the hot pools with our camp fee ($24). So we have decided to stay two nights and do some hiking into the desert tomorrow assuming the store is open. If it is not open, we will have to detour 20km off route to stock up so fingers crossed!
Oh, and while it was a little gusty riding this morning, the forecast high winds never did eventuate so we had a pleasant afternoon soaking in the hot pools!
