Day 96, the perfect day!

Day 96, October 10th, 48.4km and 614m climb, Red Mountain RV Park, Kremmling to Horseshoe campsite (closed), Ute Pass Road

Today was one of those perfect days on a bike. Blue skies, cool but not cold, interesting road and scenery, gradual climbs with the odd downhill - just glorious. Three people have told us in the past 24 hours that this is the best time to be riding in Colorado and we are inclined to believe them. We sure are enjoying Colorado compared to Wyoming!

It was minus 4 when we got up this morning but surprisingly little frost. Possibly because of the more desert-like climate in Kremmling? We are not sure but it sure was bitter riding the 2km to the local mercantile to top up some supplies and grab some breakfast! Small luxuries though, at least the bathrooms are heated at the RV parks and they have hot running water!

So we finally got under way and wound our way out of Kremmling firstly up to Williams Fork Reservoir which was looking decidedly empty and the on toward Ute Pass. We are back up to over 2600m tonight staying in a US Forest Service campground that is closed for the season. Happily they have not locked the toilets (although there is no loo paper - luckily we have plenty). There is a river nearby for water and we do enjoy the luxury of a picnic table!

We are still in black bear country so have lowered the food bags off the adjacent bridge over the river. Despite all the signs saying food must be stored properly,  there are no bear boxes which always seems a little ironic. We will always remember the bear box at the informal campsite back in Idaho that was literally in the middle of nowhere!

Off to Silverthorne tomorrow.  Not entirely sure where to after that as camping spots are a bit sparse heading south!

Haven't picked up all your messages,so about time I commented. I am still in Nelson with Irene, fly home in 2 days. Have been away long enough, and about time to return. Irene hasn't said so, but it's time to return. It has been lovely, though.
Sounds as if you're still enjoying life on the road, and your weather should be good for a while yet.
Keep enjoying, and keep in touch.
