Day 85, September 29th, 48km and 554m climb, informal campsite South Pass City Road to Diagnus Well
After a quiet night, we were about as organized as we have ever been in the morning and were on the road by just after 8am. First stop was South Pass City which is not a city at all but a State Historic Site; a restored 1800s mining town. We arrived at the same time as a bus full of children so didn't stay long.

Next stop was Atlantic City which is also not a city but is slightly more populated than South Pass City was. We had hoped to get more information on the weather before we headed into the basin but instead we had a yummy second breakfast at the pub and some half hearted reassurance that we would be fine!

The sun was shining so we pressed on. It was a steep climb out of Atlantic City but from there was generally downhill to our camp for the night at Diagnus Well. The well is simply a pipe coming up from under the ground that constantly flows. It is not potable but fine with treatment. We are also carrying a total of 14l of water between us just in case. Probably a bit of overkill but we may not make the next water supply tomorrow which is about 100km away!
The roads are rough but we can usually find a smooth line. The scenery is desolate, sandy vista's with very little growing. Even the sagebrush is struggling in places. At least we can see the thunderstorms coming!
