Day 70, heading off route

Day 70, September 14th, 41.7km and 274m climb, Red Hawk Lodge to Bill Froome Memorial RV park.

After a perfect sleep in a real bed, we woke to coffee, hot chocolate, blueberry pancakes, scrambled eggs with ham and juice. Delicious! It was hard to get Gordon away from Mel who was full of amazing stories of life as an Outfitter. An Outfitter is a wilderness guide, in Mel's case with 7 horses and a mule. There are huge stag heads and other skins and pelts adorning the walls of the lodge. An amazing place and a real treat for us.

I finally managed to drag Gordon away and we headed off on the bikes. It rained a fair amount overnight so the road was slushy, but for a second day we have been lucky and the rain has stayed away while we have been on the bikes. The riding temperature is also suiting us better at between 16 and 20 degrees. We crossed the Divide again today and have also crossed into Idaho. We will only be here briefly though as we have left the Divide route to head into Yellowstone National Park which will take us back into Montana.

Tonight we are camped part way toward Yellowstone on Henry's Lake, a prime trout spot but apparently plagued by New Zealand mudsnails. Goodness knows how they got here! It's a lovely wee campground right on the lake.

The next 3 nights we have booked into a KOA campground which is kind of like a New Zealand Top 10 so a bit more expensive but with very good facilities. We have also booked a day tour of Yellowstone which is also a very luxurious way of visiting the park but we appreciate the commentary and added insight a tour gives us and it will also take us to places we wouldn't go on the bike. Unfortunately the forecast for the next few days is not great but with a bit of luck it won't snow.
