Day 65, ghost town

Day 65, September 9th, 40.4km and 213m climb, Grasshopper campsite to Bannack ghost town.

This morning I went to pour water from my water bottle into the pot to make breakfast and wondered why nothing came out. It was frozen!  Definitely our coldest start yet. By the time we hopped on the bikes, I was wearing most of my clothes. A quick stop at Ma Barnes Market 5km down the road and we were slightly warmer getting going.

The ride was again fully sealed and predominantly downhill so lunchtime saw us at our destination for the day, Bannack State Park. Bannack is an old gold mining town that was eventually abandoned and the last residents bought out by the state in the 1970s. It is uniquely preserved with many of the original buildings still intact. The cost of entry was included in our camp fee so we spent several hours wandering through the buildings and trying our hand at gold panning. No luck with the gold but I got heaps of red garnets so a bit of fun was had.

The day didn't really warm up much with a cold wind persisting into the evening so we have been well wrapped up all day. Gordon still hasn't pulled out his puffer jacket so I guess it's not that cold yet. -2 is cold enough for me though!

The next couple of days we are travelling through an area that is little used by the general public so should be interesting.
