Day 36, gravel, gravel, gravel!

Day 36, August 11th, 55.6km and 549m climb, Spray Lake to Elkwood Campsite

Well, our fix on my mattress didn't work. Another night of shuffling between hard ground and pumping it up again. Oh well, we'll keep trying. It might be a new mat after all.

Today was pretty much all about gravel, thick, chunky stuff with corrugations in between. Fortunately there was often a smooth line just along the edge of the road which made it a bit less of a challenge at times. We wound along Spray Lake for quite a while before gradually climbing up to the high point of the day. At times it felt excruciatingly slow!

We stopped for lunch at a wee picnic spot with beautiful views and a no camping sign except for hikers and bikers. Like our hiker biker site last night, there were bear boxes and toilets. Our site last night even had a bike tool station. They are well set up for bikers, that's for sure.

After lunch it was predominantly downhill before an unexpected steep tar sealed downhill which turned into an uphill to the Kananaskis Visitors Centre. We stopped to visit the displays and use their free wifi before taking a sealed bike path a further 5km to our stop for the night. This all sounds very civilized but we are very much in the back country still. There are no shops or houses, just national/provincial Park.

We pulled into the camp managers and they told us Zach had already grabbed us a spot so another pleasant evening chatting with Zach.

We have been incredibly lucky with the weather so far, another beautiful sunny day today and mild temperatures at night.
