Days 33 and 34, Banff

We've had 3 nights in Banff to rest and recover and attend to a bit of housekeeping. We stayed at the Banff International Hostel which was literally the only affordable place in town and still cost us CAN$84 each per night for a bed in a 9 bed room. Hopefully we have escaped without covid. Still, it served the purpose and was comfortable enough, had secure bike storage and free breakfast.

On our first day in Banff we took a bus trip up to Lake Louise and halfway along the Icefields Parkway. This was a wonderful day with stunning views and an awful lot quicker and easier than trying to do it on the bike which was our other option. We both agreed it was well worth doing it this way.

On the second day we wandered into town and managed to find a cheap fix for my sleeping mat (chapstick on the valve), purchase a new filter for water treatment and stock up on a few essentials. In the evening we hopped on a public bus and went up to the base of the gondola. I'm sure the views from the top were amazing but we decided to save our budget for food which kind of feels a little more important and costs nearly as much as going up the gondola!

We met a small group of riders from the US and had a lovely dinner together on the second night. Thanks Mark, Tim and Noreen for the shout, we hope to reciprocate further down the trail.

There were certainly a few riders wandering through town loaded with gear so I'm sure we'll see plenty of people on the trail. Back into it tomorrow.
