Day 6, vanlife, a quiet day in the wilderness

Day 6, Vanlife, January 25, Anatori River Mouth, West Coast, South Island New Zealand

We had a very quiet day today. The weather was Alternatively wet, windy or sunny but couldn't quite make up its mind which. It was a good thing though, as Gordon is tired and needed a day off from me dragging him out tramping and riding.

We did manage a walk down to the beach along the river just before high tide. This meant crossing the river ankle deep on the way out and knee deep on the way back! The beach is stunning, golden sands, blue surf and the river mouth to keep the rip visible in the sea. Gordon went back to the van after our visit to the beach but I went exploring further up river. The Anatori River stretches well into the Kahurangi National Park, surrounded by native bush and cliffs. Very West Coast rainforest.

This evening we have a fire pit going. After 6 months camping in North America where fire pits are a deeply embedded part of camping culture, we thought we would bring the practice home with us. With driftwood aplenty on the beach and river banks, there is no shortage of wood. The wind is naturally swirling around so no matter where you sit, the smoke is in your face. But never mind, there's nothing quite like camping with a fire!

Tomorrow we are heading back out of here to Golden Bay and the northern most tip of the South Island.
