Day 62, September 6th, 65.11km and 1088m climb, Butte to Beaverdam campground

Today I thought I might get some new cycling shoes as mine are nearing the end of their life, however it was not to be. The pair that might have been ok were half a size too small. Sarah from the Derailed Bike Shop in Butte went out of her way to help me try them so thanks Sarah!

Once we left Sarah's place we had a short section of sealed road before turning into the Thompson Park and a wee bit of single track. Now interestingly, the 2018 GPX files we have (thanks for sharing Andrew, so much easier with the files!) don't match the app I have been using so we did a bit of navigating and figured it out. The single track was a bit of hike a bike at the beginning but opened out to a lovely wee section for about 5km. It was uphill though so a bit of a grunt. From here we climbed up and over the Divide again, topping out at 2200m. What I thought would then be downhill was really a 10km section of steep undulations which killed my legs completely! Finally we reached the actual downhill and dropped into a wide valley before starting the final climb up to the lovely quiet campground we are at tonight.

The smoke today from the wildfires wasn't too bad but this evening we have been coated with ash for the first time. The fires are well away from us but the wind is blowing the smoke and ash directly onto us. It makes for some eerie colours and the need to try and keep things under cover.

Tomorrow we tackle the infamous Fleecer Ridge.
